At what age does it end?

I don't know if any of you gals out there deal with acne/oily skin too (more than likely at least a couple of you do)...I'm about sick of it. I really didn't think that at 27 I'd still be dealing with it! It's better than it was as a teen for sure, but even so my face still looks like I'm about 15. Usually you can't tell so much in my photos...sure...but that's because I wear enough makeup to cover as much of it as I can (and I hate that I end up wearing so much of it but I've tried going a week at a time with out it and that made no difference at all). Have any of you found anything that works? I've tried everything from store brand to proactive to diet. Nothing helps. Every so often I'll go through a few weeks with out problems and just as my skin almost looks clear....voila...another break out happens. I mean...I'm not looking to be an airbrushed supermodel from a magazine, but clear/even skin would be swell! I mean hello...at 27 I'm so over it! Sheesh!
I was having one of those look in the mirror and let out a loud sigh of frustration type of days today...because I'm in the middle of a break out right now! I mean I get it...I've heard it all (you shouldn't worry about it...you're beautiful just the way you are....but that doesn't really take away the insecurities (and maybe to others it's not as obvious as it is to me but it bugs me sooo bad!). I love makeup and all...playing with it for nights out with the hubby but I'd love to just be able to walk out of the door with out spending 30 min putting on my face...strategically hiding one pimple after another...it's like a stinkin' art project in the mornings!

Ok I'm stepping off of my soap box now...sorry ladies...needed to vent! :0)

  2. Hi chooky,

Weeell my saving grace in the last year has been Proactive, (though I see you've already tried it). It is the only thing I have ever found that works. Thing is I read that it takes up to 3 months for Proactive to really work so all I could ask is how long you tried it for before declaring it unsuccessful?

I do know that many people can't do the Proactive thing because it is so strong. I must admit when I first started using it, it burnt like crazy, but after a few uses my skin got used to it and now I have the clearest skin ever (just like the commercials say)!

I feel for you I really do, I know how depressing it can get, when oh when will it ever go away!?

Good luck finding something that really works, hopefully someone else will comment here with a better solution then I!

  3. I used to have acne too...except I got on an acutane regimen and it cleared up alright but not with out serious repercussions on my health that I didn't know was going to happen like my hair thinning and my inability now to digest dairy. Acne clearly stinks but honestly if I could go back I wouldn't do it...I wish I could offer you a suggestion that really worked for me that doesn't involve health risks but I can't...I too tried it all and now my skin is clear but my body paid the price...

  4. My mother always had clear skin and all she ever used was rubbing alcohol on tissue. She said that the alcohol dried out the oily areas and also acted as a preservative. She was a senior (57) when she passed away and she still had to show ID to prove it to get her senior discounts.

  5. I totally know how you feel! I started getting bad acne in college as a result of stress, and although it has gotten better it's definitely still a huge annoyance.

The thing that made the difference for me was using 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. I seriously swear by the stuff. It brought my skin from Horrible to Bearable. I found out about it from acne.org, this guy developed a regimen that really works wonders, and really the only "medication" is the BP. I used the Neutrogena "on the spot" for a while, but it gets expensive. So now I buy it straight from acne.org. I like the consistency of theirs better too.

I go on tangents about this all the time, because I feel so strongly that people shouldn't have to suffer from bad skin!

  7. Thanks girls, wow...I had no idea so many of you deal with acne too. Seems like all I ever see around here are the beautiful sunkissed clearskinned little girlies....and those that I do see with the breakouts are young little teen babies and I just wanna give 'em a big hug and say "I totally get it!!!".

As far as proactive. I think I probably only tied it for about a month because it "hurt" because my skin seemed to dry out so bad in some spots and then I quit using it. My mom says it seems to be working for her already and she's only been using it about two weeks (she's in her fourties and still dealing with it). I don't know, maybe I'll give it another shot...
Meg! Oh my goodness, that's terrible?! They had no warning of any kind about using that stuff?I don't even know if I've ever heard of it. That's so awful!
I've never used just the alcohol or just the benzoyl peroxide. I'm going to have to check out acne.org! You're so very right, NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH BAD SKIN! :0(
A new follower! YEY! :0) Welcome, friend! I'll be checking out your blog too! Thanks for stopping by!
Hope I didn't forget to comment anyone! So sorry if I did.

  8. btw...those who've tried proactive...did it bleach your towels and sheets too? It did mine?! Maybe it's changed since I tried it...but a few years ago when I used it I kept seeing bleach spots on everything my face had touched.

  9. I did use Proactiv- it dried out my skin really bad too! I do remember that it bleached my towels and sheets. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide will do that too, but I've learned to just use white towels for my face. As far as sheets go, oddly enough some sheets don't get affected by it. I've noticed the cheaper ones do, but not the nice ones (from Target, just a bit more pricey). I don't know if it has to do with how they were dyed, or what!

  10. Breakouts have gotten better for me since I've gotten older, but I still have them from time to time. I've used this neutrogena oil free acne wash face soap, but instead of using it as the directions say, I put a little dab of it on the problem area and just leave it over night. It helps. I've used alcohol and it works good too. My problem is that my face never seems to be an even color. I always wear makeup. I totally understand the insecure feelings about appearance - that's me all the time.

  11. I just stumbled across your blog, and I'm enjoying what I've read so far. :)

If you feel your acne is severe enough for prescription strength, Benzaclin worked well for me when I used it. It will bleach things, though, so you do have to be careful with it. It's also expensive, but if you have insurance coverage, it's worth looking into.
